Alton Towers Resort was victorious at last night’s ScareCON SCAR Awards, picking up two awards out of the six nominations it received.
Beating competition from a range of high quality scare attractions and events, Alton Towers Resort walked away with the award for “Best set and design” for Darkest Depths, and “Best theme park event” for Scarefest.
The Resort had received six nominations in five categories:
- Best set and design – The Attic: Terror of the Towers
- Best set and design – Darkest Depths
- Best costume and make up – Darkest Depths
- Best year round scare attraction – The Alton Towers Dungeon
- Best theme park event – Scarefest
- Best Halloween maze – The Attic: Terror of the Towers
These most recent awards mark a return to winning ways, being the first time since 2017 that Alton Towers Resort have been victorious at the SCAR Awards with the Resort walking away empty handed in both 2018 and 2019. Previous successes which have seen the Resort win awards for ‘Best Halloween Scare Attraction’ for Altonville Mine Tours: Uncover the Legend of the Skin Snatchers and the ‘Award for Technical Excellence’ for the Haunted Lanterns in Altonville Mine Tours in 2017. Past years have also seen the Resort win awards in various categories including ‘Best Halloween Scare Attraction’ for Sub Species: The End Games, and The Sanctuary, and ‘Best Overnight Scare Experience’ in 2014 and 2015.
Despite Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures Resort receiving two nominations apiece, and the London Dungeon also being nominated for an award, all three attractions walked away empty handed.
Now in its thirteenth year, the SCAR awards are held annually by ScareCON in association with ScareTOUR (a site dedicated to providing independent reviews of scare attractions all over the world). This year’s ScareCON was due to be held at Thorpe Park Resort this May, however, due to the ongoing situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event has unfortunately had to be postponed until 2021. Instead, the 2020 SCAR Award winners were announced in a special online video on Tuesday 5th May.
