With the apocalypse arriving in a small section of Alton Towers Resort, the only way to survive was to pass through a military restricted zone – the catch being that this had been infested by a horde of zombies!
So as not to overwhelm the infected, guests were batched into Zombies! Scare Zone at a controlled pace.
The route was not without its obstacles, with abandoned vehicles and evidence of destruction found at every turn. Eventually you would reach the decontamination tent, although didn’t always mean you had reached safety and escaped the zombies…
Zombies! Scare Zone was a new addition for Scarefest 2011, situated in the back-of-house pathway running from opposite the Hospitality Suite down to the Goalstriker building.
The attraction was the first time that the Resort had incorporated a scare zone into their Halloween line-up, being free to enter and provided a level of scare not quite as intense as the scare mazes.
The attraction was relocated upon returning for Scarefest 2012, in order to allow Carnival of Screams to occupy its original location. Its new location was in a different back-of-house area, this time along a service road running off from a pathway just off from the Towers Archway into Dark Forest.
2013 saw a significant makeover for Zombies! Scare Zone, with the main route being reversed so guests now entered opposite Woodcutters Restaurant, and extra theming elements being added. Costumes had also been refreshed for characters throughout the maze.
The scare zones returned largely unchanged for Scarefest 2014, for what would be its final year of operation. Although not directly replaced for Scarefest 2015, the Resort did evolve its scare zone format with the addition of the free-flowing Nox Infernus and Dark Apocalypse.
