From 2019 to 2023, guests were invited to board the infamous ghost ship “The Mutiny” and journey into the Darkest Depths.
Fact File
- Location: Mutiny Bay Courtyard / Near Dark Forest
- Opening Year: 2019
- Closing Year: 2023
Guests began their journey with a visit to the Smugglers Inn, where they were told the tale of ‘The Mutiny’ by its landlord, who then revealed a secret passageway which guests were invited to enter to discover the ship’s fate for themselves.
It didn’t take long for guests to find themselves aboard the ship, enlisted into the crew by its captain. As they explored the bowels of the ship, guests would encounter fellow crew mates, with the combination of the physical sets, lighting and sound effects, and use of scents (including a particularly pungent vomit scent), all contributing to the immersion.
However, with guests still aboard, the ship came under attack by the sea’s meanest legend of all – the Kraken! Despite the crew’s best effort to defend the vessel, it was dragged to the depths of the ocean where guests would have to beware of the Sirens who would try to lure them into their grasp, before finding themselves coming face to face the Kraken itself!
Darkest Depths was the second new addition to the Scarefest 2019 line up alongside The Attic: Terror of the Towers. In its debut season, the attraction was located in Mutiny Bay Courtyard which was previously home to The Welcoming during 2017 and 2018. With House of Monsters departing the Scarefest line-up, as a new family maze, Darkest Depths was seen as an indirect replacement for this popular attraction. The maze was praised for its highly detailed sets which made for an incredibly immersive experience.
Although Darkest Depths returned for Scarefest 2020, the maze was relocated to the area behind Dark Forest which had had last been occupied by Zombies! Scare Zone. With an entirely reworked route and a new finale sequence, the sea shanty of The Mutiny set sail stronger than ever.
Upon its return in 2021, Darkest Depths was promoted as a fourth scare maze (rather than as a family maze), although no major changes were noted as having been made to the experience.
Darkest Depths also returned unchanged for 2022 and 2023, with the latter being its fifth and final Scarefest.
The maze was demolished during the 2024 season, making way for a more permanent ‘facilities building’. However, the space was not utilised during Scarefest 2024.
