July 2001- Interview
with John Wardley
In July 2001 we questioned
John Wardley the man behind AIR, here are his responses to the questions
we put forward.
1) How do you think
people will react when they see AIR open for the first time?
.......
They will be amazed!
2) Why did you decide
to approach the construction of AIR differently to the construction of
Oblivion, with SW4 there was a themed fence around the area, did you consider
doing a similar 'teaser' campaign for AIR?
......
The theme of Oblivion lent itself to secrecy and mystery. That was all
part of both the theme of the ride and also the way it was marketed. The
same is not true of the theme for Air
3) When you say the
ride will be a new generation roller coaster, does this mean that there
will be a world first element?
.......
When the ride opens, it will be apparent to everyone what is the world's
first!
4) Will the ride be
heavily themed, like Nemesis, can you give us any clues of what the theme
will be?
.......
Yes, it will be heavily themed and landscaped. The theme will unfold in
the marketing campaign.
5) Why was the name
AIR decided? Is AIR the final name?
........
The logic behind the name of the ride will be apparent when the ride opens.
6) Will we see further
advertising for the ride later this year? On television, on the park?
.......
The main marketing push will take place next year.
7) What further plans
do you have in mind for the future? Do you enjoy the corkscrew, or do
you think replacing it would be beneficial?
.......
The corkscrew is a classic ride, and many people remember it as being
the first ride they experienced that turned them upside down. We have
no plans to remove it.
