Alton Towers Resort has received six nominations across six categories for the ScareCON SCAR awards, the annual awards which recognise and champion all aspects of the scare industry – from Halloween events to year-round scare attractions.
In the nominations for the 14th annual awards, which were revealed last night by ScareTOUR, the Resort picked up nominations in the following categories:
- Best set and design – Freak Show: Toxic Junkyard
- Best costume and make up – Darkest Depths
- Best original concept and design – Freak Show: Toxic Junkyard
- Best scare zone and roaming characters – Scarefest
- Best theme park event – Scarefest
- Best Halloween scare experience – Freak Show: Toxic Junkyard
Alton Towers Resort will be hoping that they can repeat their success from 2020 when they walked away with the award for ‘Best set and design’ for Darkest Depths, and ‘Best theme park event’ for Scarefest as a whole. Previous years have also seen the Resort win awards in various categories including ‘Best Halloween Scare Attraction’ for Altonville Mine Tours: Uncover the Legend of the Skin Snatchers and the ‘Award for Technical Excellence’ for the Haunted Lanterns in Altonville Mine Tours in 2017, as well as ‘Best Halloween Scare Attraction’ for Sub Species: The End Games, and The Sanctuary, and ‘Best Overnight Scare Experience’ in 2014 and 2015.
The 2021 nominations also see a range of other theme parks, namely Thorpe Park Resort and Chessington World of Adventures Resort, and scare attractions recognised for their 2020 offerings, which had to be adapted, if they were even able to go ahead, in response to the COVID pandemic. In light of the unique circumstances of 2020, this year’s awards have a new category for ‘Best adjustment to COVID’.
Now in its fourteenth year, the SCAR awards are held annually by ScareCON in association with ScareTOUR, a site dedicated to providing independent reviews of scare attractions all over the world. Following the postponement of the 2020 event, this year’s ScareCON is due to be held at Thorpe Park Resort on 10th – 12th May and brings together professionals from across the scare industry, including designers, owners, fans and experts.
